Detective Sgt David Israel
Former Newaygo County Sheriff's Deputy of 12 years, former ERT member, former undercover narcotics detective, awarded Deputy of the Year just prior to leaving, 15 total years in law enforcement
Being raised most of my life in the city of Fremont, the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office was the only department I ever wanted to work for after I graduated college: this is my home. That dream came true when I was hired there in 2009 by former Sheriff Mike Mercer. During that time Adam Mercer was the only Detective working for the department. This was unbelievable to me because of the sheer volume of cases that flow through there. One thing I always admired about Adam while he held that position, was that despite the mountain of cases he would be buried under, he would never hesitate to stop what he was doing to assist us with an investigation. Not just take it over, but actually assist and teach us throughout the process. Even though Adam was consumed in detective work, he would frequently reach out to officers and commend them on a job well done, making them feel valued and appreciated. A feeling that is very seldom felt by police officers with the recent political climate.
Several years into my career, Adam came out of the Detective Bureau to be a road patrol Sgt and I was fortunate enough to work, not UNDER him, but BESIDE him for two years. Those were the best years of my career. Adam Mercer pushed our entire crew while always leading by example. He was on the road with us, supporting us and serving the community right alongside us. Adam's crew, by far, had the highest morale and the feeling that we just couldn't wait to come to back work the next day. But most importantly he made us feel like family. He was there for us on or off duty, no matter what. Adam Mercer showed me what it looked like to truly be a leader.
I could write a book about what pushed me to the decision to finally leave the Sheriff's Department. But I will make one thing clear, I did not want to leave, Newaygo County is my home. After I left, Adam Mercer, as well as over a dozen others left.
Even though I left three years ago and took a job at a different department, Adam never fell out of contact. He treated me like I was still on his team, still a part of his family. I don't do politics and I don't do drama, but after three years of hearing about the department falling further and further into a decline, and as this election season approached, I couldn't have been more relieved when Adam decided to run for Sheriff of Newaygo County. The support and excitement from the community and local law enforcement has mirrored that feeling.
This is our community, the Sheriff's Department is the first line of defense for your friends and family that live here. Some of the best officers I have ever worked with still serve there. We can not lose them too. Lost positions can be filled, but good police officers can not be replaced. And please, do not take my word for it. I encourage you to seek out some local police officers or anyone associated with the local criminal justice system. I guarantee you that you will hear a common theme, it's time for a change, and that Adam Mercer will be the man to make that change.

Deputy Ed Haven
39 years of law enforcement, and several years with the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office I've witnessed Adam Mercer as presenting a Class A appearance, intelligent, believed in physical fitness and aggressively employed himself and his personnel to apprehend known criminals in Newaygo County. |

Phil Green
Retired NCSD K-9 Officer from Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department I am writing this letter in support of Adam Mercer for the Newaygo County Sheriff. During my nearly 30 year law enforcement career, 26 of them were at the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department. During this time I was a K9 officer for 18 years and assigned to several other positions including, but not limited to: Detective Bureau, ERT, FTO, Community Police Officer, CMET (Drug Team), and Road Patrol. For the majority of my career, I worked not only for and with Adam, but alongside him. I have witnessed Adam make well over 3000 competent police decisions. I found that Adam is a man of integrity and treats everyone equally and fairly. He prioritizes putting his team’s needs first and stands up for his employees. He does what is right, not what is popular, regardless of the consequences he may face. Adam comes from a three generation police family who have high values and morals, and are always giving back to our community. Adam is a teacher who supports, recognizes and values his employees. Adam leads by example and fosters an environment where HIS officers are encouraged to excel beyond his own standards. I have witnessed him continuously giving the most vulnerable populations throughout our community a voice, by simply listening to them and their story. Adam’s proactive and compassionate leadership style ensures that he is the right choice to lead our sheriff's department into the future, where every member of our community feels safe, valued, and supported. |
Justin Visser
Former road deputy of 18 years, 21 year police veteran. Former ERT member, Dive Team Leader, Community Police Officer, School Resource Officer. Leaders have the ability to guide and inspire others to accomplish a common goal. Adam Mercer has proven that as he has led many law enforcement personnel to be successful. During my time at the Sheriff's Office, I witnessed his ability to lead employees as a direct supervisor. He led by example and encouragement. His subordinates out worked, out performed and were excited to be in law enforcement. He was constantly praised by deputies. They took pride in their proactive policing methods and that is direct result of Adam's fantastic leadership. I have known Adam for over 30 years. Worked with him professionally for 21 years. Adam will lead with integrity, honor and respect. He will listen to community needs and respond with effective measures. He will lead because of who he is. People will want to be led by him. I, Justin Visser, fully support Adam Mercer for Newaygo County Sheriff. Juan Gonzales
Former Deputy with the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office for 9 years as road patrol I support Adam Mercer because of his strong leadership skills and his critical thinking skills. He is a very understanding person and provided us with the tools we needed to succeed. |

Nicole Crutchfield
4 years at Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office
During my tenure at the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy directly supervised by Adam Mercer, I was fortunate to have a front row seat to his leadership. Under his leadership I witnessed, first hand, a compassion for people. Adam is one who has a high caliber of integrity and ethics. Adam is not perfect, but I know him to be just. I have stood by him in various capacities and will continue to do so. Adam has my vote purely based on three things; integrity, transparency, and unity. His character exudes all of these great traits and I look forward to having him as a Sheriff.

Endorsement for Newaygo County Sheriff Candidate, Adam Mercer.
Dear Reader:
I have a few notable things from my time serving with Adam that stand out to me. From the first shift I worked as a Deputy at NCSO, I've stood shoulder to shoulder with Adam on various calls varying in severity, whereas a supervisor, he was willing to get involved. Be it tracking, pursuing, and arresting fleeing felons or simply Adam heading up the victim's advocate volunteer team. Adam, as a supervisor, standing on the side of integrity and accountability for the men and women he supervised and even those he didn't directly supervise. Adam is a man of fairness, and he has shown he desires to judge actions from a level playing field. I have witnessed him hold his people accountable with kindness and when it is just. When Adam was my direct supervisor, he went above and beyond to hold squad meetings on current and recent national events to better equip his deputies. He also did this to challenge our thought processes as to how we would deal with an incident of the same caliber. Adam, as a supervisor, encouraged his deputies to get involved and he was more than willing to go out of his way to set up meetings for our future. Specifically, coordinating and partaking in a meeting for me to speak with the Lieutenant of a team I aspired to be on. During my tenure at the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy directly supervised by Adam Mercer, I was fortunate to have a front row seat to his leadership. Under his leadership I witnessed, firsthand, a compassion for people. To sum the above up, it is my experience that Adam is a man who has a high caliber of integrity and ethics.
Adam has been a leader by example. He is one who will own his mistakes and has shown that he is willing to sit at a table with an open mind to conclude in improvement. Adam is not perfect, but I know him to be just. Adam is a man of equality and I have firsthand witnessed him support justice for incidents involving both command staff and road personnel, while remaining kind and compassionate toward those people.
Approximately one year ago, I chose to testify on Adam's behalf in an Arbitration hearing for wrongful demotion by NCSO Administration which Adam won. I chose to stand shoulder to shoulder with him as he had previously done with me. I chose to do this because the truth matters. Through all of these aforementioned incidents, three things stand out to me about Adam, and they are: Integrity, transparency, and unity. I'm advocating and choosing to support Adam for those three signifying character traits. His character exudes all these great traits and I look forward to having him as a Sheriff.
When choosing a candidate I consider, it's important to ask the tough questions. I implore anyone who's "stuck" to do the same. In my personal experience, employees don't leave their careers, they leave bad leadership. A good leader is someone others want to follow. The current Sheriff's Office administration has had more than 30 resignations in the past eight years. Why is that? These employees have a combined tenure of more than 150 years of service. The majority of these former employees are advocating for change. I'm intrigued to ask why are good employees, with years of experience, leaving under the current administration? Do they have a lack of confidence in the current Sheriff's Office administration? Local agency Chiefs have sent a letter to the current Sheriff's Office administration about a lack of confidence in the current Undersheriff. What was done about this? What caused the relational breakdown and lack of confidence? Many of my friends still work under this Sheriff's Office administration, so I can't help but understand what morale is under these current conditions.
Talk to the candidates, ask the tough questions and make your decision. If you're like me, take some significant time to pray on it. I would be doing a disservice to our community by not expressing my personal experience and the questions I have been asking since my departure in 2022. Simply put, know before you vote.

Emily Paulsen
Former Marine Patrol Deputy
I only worked alongside Adam while I was employed as a Marine Patrol deputy, but I did ride along with him, and he set a great example of what a leader is. As a young kid with no experience and no clue what the world was like for law enforcement, Adam taught me a lot about the job and the type of cop I wanted to be. Seeing the relationships he had with Deputies that worked not for him, but with him, made me so excited to become an officer.
I’ve been a Deputy for 4 years now at a different agency, and I fully support Adam for Sheriff. He is the type of leader that office needs, with his wealth of knowledge, many years of service in different positions, demand for professionalism and excellence, integrity and ethics, and willingness to always help and teach those that he works alongside no matter their rank or position.
He is compassionate and loving, and the absolute best leader for the Newaygo County Community. I grew up in the Hardy Dam area and lived there for 23 years. My family still lives there. Adam is who I want to see become Sheriff for the county that all of my family lives in. If I still lived there, he 100% without a doubt would have my vote!
